Luxating Patella is one of the most common orthopaedic conditions affecting dogs both small and large (Di Dona, Della Valle & Fatone, 2018). Patella Luxation occurs when the patella ligament and patella (kneecap) do not fully sit and move within the trochlear grove. Symptoms are normally a skipping gait and difficulty extending the hind limb. Luxating Patella can occur in one or both hind limbs and vets will grade the severity of the luxation. Physiotherapy can aid in the conservative management of this condition or support recovery post operative. Treatments can include:-

  • Massage to ease pain and tension caused by Luxating Patella.
  • Strengthening the hind limb muscles to support the stifle (knee) joint.
  • Gait retraining to help the dog move better and reduce the symptoms.
  • Advice on lifestyle, weight management and environmental changes which in turn can assist in positively managing the condition.
