Hip Dysplasia is a condition causing the malformation of the hip joint in which the end of the femur (femoral head) does not sit comfortably within the cup like socket of the pelvis (acetabulum). This in turn causes microfractures that once healed cause osteoarthritic changes (Lopez & Schachner, 2015). Conditions such as this will be diagnosed by a vet but symptoms can include reluctance to jump, a bunny hopping run and a wide or leaning sit. If left untreated, this can become a painful condition for the animal. Physiotherapy can help manage this condition in various ways:-
- Massage, which can help ease pain and tension (due to the change in the dogs movement it causes)
- Custom Exercise Plan, leading to strengthening the hind limb muscles to support the joint
- Gait retraining, helping the dog move better and improving the animals comfort
- Advice on lifestyle, weight management and environmental changes that can reduce the symptoms
