Lost Dog Awareness Day
Hi Everyone,
Somewhat of a change to my usual posts around care and treatment for your beloved pets but today is Lost Dog Awareness Day! I therefore wanted to take this opportunity to ask you to consider how prepared you are for the unthinkable – your beloved pet lost. You may not be aware that your local vets can quickly and easily scan your animal to make sure their microchips work, why don’t you drop in and check next time you are passing?
It has been law since 2016 that all dogs must be microchipped, however there is nothing within the law that states if these chips need to be checked and confirmed operational. With many dogs going missing or stolen every year, some being found years later, other owners never knowing what has happened to their beloved pet.
So, on this day I ask you to:-
· Get your dog’s chip scanned
· Get the vet receptionist to check if the chip is registered
· Update you chip details especially if you have moved or changed your phone number
· Make sure your gardens are secure and dogs are unable to escape (especially after our stormy winter!)
· If you let your dog off the lead, make sure they have a solid recall, wait, and stop instruction
· Have an up-to-date clear picture of your dog should they go missing
Cats from June 2024 will also need to be microchipped by law.
Hopefully you will never be in the traumatic position where you dog becomes lost but if you do, having an up-to-date microchip will give you more of a chance of being reunited.
Take today to give yourself and your pet some well deserved peace of mind.
Lost Dog Awareness Day!
Charlotte
